I worked closely with Cara Llewellyn on Packs as the in-house designer assigned to manage and oversee the project. While she was the mastermind behind the layout and interior design, I was lucky to have the opportunity to pitch a cover concept that ultimately became the final jacket! This started by looking to Hannah Salyer’s already existing interior pieces for inspiration- in much of the book, she uses the shape and color of a specific animal to layer and build up textures and patterns by showing a large group of them together. I specifically was looking at her white wolves when the concept came to mind. Below are images showing the work by Hannah that inspired the idea, and my first concept sketch that I submitted to the full group, Cara, Hannah, and our editor, Kate. When there ultimately was enthusiasm for that direction, Hannah sent back her version for how to approach it, and I did one more round of suggestions, editing her sketch to have taller, thinner type, with slightly different overlaps. Then, we all went through many rounds of getting the type and color to work together to make the type legible while not drowning out the stunning animals all around it! I think Cara and Hannah’s work is truly masterful.
